Kutztown, PA – Today Rodale Institute announced Wedderspoon Organic and Salba Chia as the newest partners in their Your 2 Cents program, an inventive program which unites producers, consumers, researchers and educators to launch the next generation of organic farmers. The Your 2 Cents program was formed with the idea that companies donate 2 cents per case good sold to the Your 2 Cents Fund. In turn, the fund (1) awards scholarships to students of organic agriculture, (2) assists new organic farmers, (3) helps military veterans establish new careers in organic farming and (4) supports research projects on organic agriculture at Rodale Institute.
Wedderspoon Organic and Salba Chia join several brands from the organic sector participating in the Your 2 Cents program, including Amy’s Kitchen, Boiron, Brad’s Raw Foods, DeLoach, EcoTulips, Erewhon, Farm Organix, Kimberton Whole Foods, Maple Hill Creamery, Natural by Nature, Nature’s Path, New Chapter, Peace Tree Farm, Shop Organic, Uncle Matt’s Organics and Wild Planet.
Rodale Institute also recently collaborated with Amy’s Kitchen to grant funds for organic seeds to six deserving farmers. Two farmers receiving support were:
Peacefully Organic Produce is a veteran-led, community supported agriculture (CSA) farm near Madison, Wisconsin. This organization sought to create a healthy and peaceful place for those returning home from deployment with the goal to empower, not just employ, veterans.
Broadfork Farm, a Canadian organic farm in Nova Scotia, grows mixed vegetables, herbs, cut flowers, and fruit. They have a small flock of chickens and some honeybees. They sell through their local farmers’ market, health food stores and restaurants.
Executive Director of Rodale Institute, ‘Coach’ Mark Smallwood, welcomed Wedderspoon and Salba Chia to the Your 2 Cents program, “Our new partners have proven their commitment to a healthier planet through their work. They’re ‘walking the walk’ and we’re proud to walk with them, helping to bring new organic farmers into production, training returning veterans as organic farmers and furthering key scientific discovery on the organic front. We’re deeply honored to be in such good company through our Your 2 Cents program.”
With over 50 products sourced from selected global partners, Wedderspoon Organic has produced premium and organic honeys in North America for the last 8. They are now part of the Non-GMO Project with a large number of honeys and honey products, which includes the first NON-GMO verified Manuka Honey line available in the world.
“It’s an honor to join the pioneers of the organic movement,” said Fiona Nelson, President of Wedderspoon Organic. “Rodale Institute continues to add strength to this movement through smart programs like Your 2 Cents. At first, we were inspired by the Institute’s Honeybee Conservancy model to see what we could do together, and the Institute has made it so easy for us to partner with them. We weren’t just looking for a marketing partnership, we wanted to make a serious impact. Your 2 Cents is a perfect fit.””
Salba Smart, located in Centennial, Colorado is an American company specializing in development of the Salba chia seed and Salba chia products. Founded in 2006, Salba Smart set to produce a smarter chia seed that was nutritionally consistent enough for clinical studies. Salba chia is now the most nutrient rich organic supplement on the planet. This has created un-paralleled growth since 2006 and has placed Salba chia at the very top of the organic supplement market. All Salba Smart products are grown using organic practices in South America and are Non-GMO Project Verified.
“We’ve led the charge to make organic supplements as nutritious as possible. It only makes sense for us to partner with the pioneers of the organic movement itself,” said Rally Ralston, Managing Partner of Salba Smart.
Since its founding in 1947 by J.I. Rodale, the Rodale Institute has been committed to groundbreaking research in organic agriculture, advocating for policies that support farmers, and educating people about how organic is the safest, healthiest option for people and the planet. The Institute is home to the Farming Systems Trial (FST), America’s longest-running side-by-side comparison of chemical and organic agriculture. Consistent results from the study have shown that organic yields match or surpass those of conventional farming. This year, 2014, marks the 34th year of the trial. New areas of study at the Rodale Institute include rates of carbon sequestration in chemical versus organic plots, new techniques for weed suppression and organic livestock.
